Understanding Your Audience

Before we dive into content creation, it’s crucial to understand who we’re creating for.

We’ve discussed audiences here numerous times but when it comes to marketing, knowing your audience is critical for success.

Take some time to identify your target audience. Who are they? What are their interests and preferences? More than likely your audience will have the same interests as you, so start with yourself when you’re asking questions and then you can look into targeting audiences you would like to capture.

Understanding your audience will help you tailor your content to resonate with them on a deeper level.

Finding Your Tribe

When I first started sharing my work online, I was struggling to gain an audience. It wasn’t until I delved into understanding my audience that I began to connect with like-minded individuals who appreciated my work.

By researching their interests and engaging with them authentically, I was able to grow my following and build a supportive community around my art.

Leveraging Visual Storytelling

As creatives, we have a powerful tool at our disposal: visual storytelling. Use your art to tell stories, evoke emotions, and captivate your audience. Share your creative process through captivating visuals that take your audience on a journey from conception to completion.

Behind-the-Scenes Sneak Peeks

Give your audience a glimpse into your creative process with behind-the-scenes content.

Whether it’s a timelapse video of your digital painting process or a series of photos showcasing your workspace, sharing behind-the-scenes moments humanizes your brand and invites your audience to be a part of your creative journey.

The Power of Process

You can see the power of sharing your creative process and how it engages and captivates audiences in other people’s channels. I have a couple of animators for friends and when they show their compositing or lighting work and then see it in the result is so fascinating.

People love seeing the intricate details and the thought process behind each stage of the work. Even their colleagues appreciate the look behind the scenes because they might learn a new trick to solving a problem.

You just never know what will boost engagement and also foster a sense of connection and authenticity with followers.

Showcasing the Evolution of Your Work

Your creative journey is a story in itself, filled with growth, experimentation, and discovery. Share the evolution of your work with your audience to inspire and motivate them on their creative paths.

Time-lapse Transformation

Create time-lapse videos or slideshows that showcase the evolution of your artwork from the initial sketch to the final masterpiece. Highlight the different stages of your creative process, including brainstorming, sketching, refining, and adding finishing touches.

Embracing Imperfection

As an artist, it’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of perfection. However, I’ve learned that embracing imperfection and showcasing the evolution of my work has been incredibly freeing.

Am I still comfortable with it? No, not by any means just yet, but by sharing my early sketches and unfinished pieces, I invite my audience to embrace the messy and imperfect aspects of creativity.

Utilizing Social Media Platforms Effectively

Social media is a goldmine for creatives looking to share their work and connect with a global audience. Choose the platforms that align with your brand and audience demographics, and leverage them effectively to amplify your content.

Instagram: Visual Showcase

Instagram is the perfect platform for visually showcasing your artwork. Use high-quality images or videos to captivate your audience’s attention and don’t forget to use relevant hashtags to reach a broader audience.

YouTube: Behind-the-Scenes Vlogs

YouTube is a great platform for sharing longer-form content such as behind-the-scenes vlogs, tutorials, and studio tours. Use it as a platform to engage with your audience on a deeper level and provide valuable insights into your creative process.

Finding Your Social Media Niche

Starting your social media journey can be a bit overwhelming. There are a multitude of platforms out there but it is important to narrow your focus on a couple of key platforms and focus on building content and your audience on them first.

You may discover that TikTok gets more engagement than YouTube Shorts, and that is ok, but at least you know where to spend the bulk of your efforts and cultivate a dedicated following of art enthusiasts who resonate with your content.

Creating Compelling Content

Now that you have a solid understanding of your audience and the platforms you’ll be using, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and start creating compelling content that showcases your creativity and passion.

Develop a Content Calendar

A content calendar is your roadmap for creating and distributing content consistently. Plan out your content in advance, taking into account key dates, holidays, and events relevant to your audience.

Diversify Content Formats

Don’t limit yourself to just one type of content. Experiment with different formats such as videos, blogs, social media posts, and podcasts to keep your audience engaged and interested.

Highlight Unique Aspects of Your Creative Process

What sets your creative process apart from others? Whether it’s your use of unconventional materials, your signature style, or your unique approach to problem-solving, highlight these unique aspects to make your content stand out.

Engaging Your Audience

Engagement is the lifeblood of content marketing. Foster meaningful interactions with your audience by encouraging feedback, responding to comments, and hosting interactive events.

Encourage Interaction and Feedback

Invite your audience to share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences related to your content. Ask questions, run polls, and encourage comments to foster a sense of community and dialogue.

Respond to Audience Comments and Inquiries

Take the time to respond to every comment, message, and inquiry from your audience. Show them that you value their input and appreciate their support.

Measuring Success and Iterating

Last but not least, it’s essential to measure the success of your content marketing efforts and iterate based on insights and feedback.

Set Clear Goals and KPIs

Define what success looks like for your content marketing efforts. Whether it’s increasing brand awareness, driving website traffic, or boosting sales, set clear goals and key performance indicators (KPIs) to track your progress.

Track Engagement Metrics

Monitor engagement metrics such as likes, shares, comments, and click-through rates to gauge the effectiveness of your content. Identify which types of content resonate most with your audience and double down on what works.

Learning from Failure

Not every piece of content will be a hit, and that’s okay. I’ve learned just as much from my failures as I have from my successes. Instead of dwelling on what didn’t work, I use it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and iterate on my content strategy.

Final Thoughts
